Cooking is for Everyone: Basic White Sauce

Many people have it in their heads that cooking is very hard. Let me tell you that it is not the case. I have taught many friends who "Don't cook" with this recipe.

1 1/2 tablespoons of butter
1 1/2 tablespoons of flour
1 cup of milk

In a sauce pan melt the butter into the flour ( don't forget to stir it! )over medium heat. It will form a nice thick paste. Now slowly add a little bit of milk at a time. Make sure to stir as you do this. You should be keeping that thicker paste with each little bit of milk you add. If you add the milk all at once your sauce will be runny and lumpy. Be careful not to let your sauce boil ( milk likes to burn to the bottom of the pan if this happens). Once you have added all your milk the fun can begin.

Add Cheddar to your white sauce for great homemade macaroni and cheese ( don't forget to add salt and pepper too!)

Add your favorite pesto to the white sauce for a creamy pesto dinner.

Turn it into and Alfredo sauce.

Turn it into a Mexican cheese sauce for enchiladas or nachos.

So many possibilities. Don't be shy with your spices either!
